 | Panama Canal Grapples with Water Shortage Issues According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), the world-renowned waterway remains beset by water scarcity issues, notwithstanding some respite brought by recent rainfall. In a stark assessment, the ACP declared, “The waterway continues to face the impact of a prolonged dry season from this past year that limited the capacity of daily passages through the canal. Despite the start of the rainy season, the water problem for Panama and its Canal is not over.” What sets the Panama Canal apart from others – say, Egypt’s Suez Canal – lies in its reliance on precipitation-fed artificial lakes, specifically Gatún and Alajuela. This vulnerability was brutally exposed during the severe drought triggered by El Niño last year. Consequently, passage capacities were slashed, alongside reductions in allowable vessel drafts. |
