Coast Guard Issues Stark Warning Against Participation in Port Huron Float Down

As the annual Port Huron Float Down approaches this Sunday, the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards are once again voicing their concerns over the unsanctioned event that attracts thousands to the St. Clair River. Despite the festive atmosphere, the risks associated with this event are significant and have prompted a stern warning from authorities.

The event, which sees participants floating on various devices from Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron to Chrysler Beach in Marysville, has been a cause for concern due to the absence of official oversight. "Medical emergencies, people drifting across the international border, and people trespassing on residential property when trying to get out of the water before the designated finish line are some of the numerous difficulties encountered during the float down event," the U.S. Coast Guard stated in a memo.

In response to the potential dangers, the Coast Guard will establish a "temporary safe zone" in the river to mitigate accidents. However, the lack of formal organization for the Float Down means that no one has officially communicated with the Coast Guard to coordinate safety measures.

Both Coast Guards have advised against participation: "This is an inherently dangerous activity. As first responders, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard recommend that people do not take part in this event."

Despite these warnings, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office has acknowledged the event's popularity, emphasizing the importance of safety. "While it is a fun activity, a great way to cool down, and a unique way to see the shoreline, safety is of utmost importance," their news release stated.

Participants who choose to ignore the advisories are urged to wear approved life jackets, carry waterproof bags for personal items and identification, bring a paddle, and file a "Float Plan" with someone onshore. The Coast Guard also recommends using the buddy system, refraining from alcohol consumption, dressing appropriately for the weather, and ensuring all flotation devices are marked with contact information.
