The Church of England's Identity Crisis: Dropping the 'Church' to Attract Crowds
In a surprising move aimed at revitalizing attendance, the Church of England is reportedly abandoning the term "church" in its outreach efforts, as revealed by a recent study.
The research, titled "New Things: A theological investigation into the work of starting new churches across 11 dioceses in the Church of England," was conducted by the Centre for Church Planting Theology and Research in Durham. This qualitative study examined the language used by 11 dioceses to describe their new church initiatives.
Traditionally, new congregations have been referred to as "church plants." However, the Centre for Church Planting Theology found that despite the establishment of over 900 new churches in the past decade, none of the dioceses employed the terms "church" or "church plant."
"Not one diocese used the term ‘church’ in their main descriptor. ‘Church plant’ is not used by any of the 11 dioceses. Only one diocese used ‘fresh expressions’ of ‘pioneering’ in its descriptor," the study concluded.
Instead of traditional terminology, these new entities are being labeled as "new things," leaving the specifics of their identity ambiguous. The study raises critical questions about the implications of this linguistic shift:
