Russia’s Encouraging Sex at Work

Russia is implementing a controversial policy encouraging sexual activity during work breaks to combat its declining birth rate, which currently stands at 1.5 children per woman, well below the replacement rate.

This initiative includes financial incentives, restrictions on abortions, and even offers like free fertility checks for women in Moscow aged 18-40 amidst a broader population crisis worsened by the war with Ukraine.

Critics and observers note the desperation in these measures, which are aimed at boosting the population and workforce in the future, reflecting a significant demographic challenge for Russia.

As Newsweek reported, Putin explained, “Proper conditions are being created for women to succeed professionally while remaining guardians of the hearth and lynchpins of large families with many children.”
