Free Speech Under Attack at Indiana University: Candlelight Vigil Sparks Controversy Over New Policy

A chilling blow to First Amendment freedoms occurred last weekend when the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) reported multiple individuals to university administrators for allegedly violating its newly implemented "expressive activity" policy. This heavy-handed move sends a disturbing message to Hoosiers everywhere: dissent won't be tolerated outside designated hours.

At stake is the fundamental right to peaceful assembly and protest. During a candlelight vigil organized by the school's Palestine Solidarity Committee, roughly forty attendees gathered at the iconic Sample Gates despite knowing they'd exceed the permitted curfew of 11 pm. Among them were notable figures, such as Professor Benjamin Robinson and Informatics grad student Bryce Greenenotable, who took bold stances and challenged authority.

As participants shared poignant messages decrying censorship and promoting unfettered discussion, the police stood silently nearby but chose not to intervene. However, authorities didn't hesitate long before clamping down; within days, Robinson and Greene faced formal reports from university officials regarding their actions during the rally.
