5 Weird Facts of the Day

Just when you think things couldn’t get any weirder…

  • 9/17 is Constitution Day.

  • The California Gold Rush began when James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, on January 24, 1848. His discovery set off one of the largest migrations in U.S. history.

  • In 1848, before the gold rush, California's non-Indigenous population was around 15,000. By 1852, that number had skyrocketed to over 250,000 as people from all over the world flocked to the area in search of fortune.

  • The Gold Rush had a devastating effect on California's environment, particularly through methods like hydraulic mining, which washed away entire hillsides and polluted rivers with sediment and chemicals.

  • The Gold Rush significantly boosted the U.S. economy, transforming cities like San Francisco into booming hubs of commerce and industry. San Francisco grew from a small settlement of around 1,000 people in 1848 to over 25,000 by 1850.
