Why is the USDA Killing So Many Animals?

The USDA's Wildlife Services program, established in the 1930s, has been heavily criticized for its methods and objectives, which include killing hundreds of thousands of wild animals annually, often at the behest of private livestock owners without substantial evidence of damage.

Documents reviewed by NPR reveal that in Montana alone, from 2019 to 2022, the program killed wildlife in areas where no livestock predation was reported, highlighting a controversial approach to wildlife management that conservation groups argue lacks scientific justification and environmental consideration.

Despite its mission to manage wildlife damage, Wildlife Services has faced legal challenges and public backlash for its lethal methods, including the use of traps, poisons, and aerial shooting. Critics, including environmental lawyers and ecologists, point out that such practices not only target individual animals but could lead to the eradication of species from entire regions, potentially disrupting ecological balances. This has sparked a debate on the accountability and necessity of Wildlife Services' operations, especially when they involve native wildlife species.ews Headline
