EU Wants Deportation, But…

The European Union is facing a significant policy shift regarding migration, particularly with regard to Syria. Italy, under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has taken a proactive stance by resuming diplomatic ties with Syria, signaling a willingness to engage with President Bashar Assad's regime despite past human rights concerns.

This move is driven by the broader EU's interest in stabilizing migration flows by potentially deporting Syrian refugees back to their homeland amidst rising anti-immigrant sentiments fueled by far-right parties across Europe. Italy's actions are seen as a precursor to what might become a more normalized EU policy of engaging with Assad to manage migration, reflecting a pragmatic approach over humanitarian considerations.

This policy shift comes at a time when migration is a hot-button issue in Europe, with countries like Italy implementing tougher measures against irregular migration. The EU's approach includes not only Italy's bilateral engagement but also discussions on broader migration pacts that might see more EU countries following suit.

The strategy involves not just containment but also the potential return of asylum seekers to Syria, contingent on improvements in security and governance there, which Assad might be willing to negotiate in exchange for diplomatic recognition and aid. This reflects a complex balancing act between human rights, security concerns, and domestic political pressures within EU member states.
